Cam Systems warns against ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach to IT Hardware

Written by: Steve Daly 01/12/2008

Too many tyre businesses are taking an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach to the maintenance of their IT hardware, according to leading industry supplier Cam Systems.

The company says that because the reliability and consistency of performance of equipment such as Servers and Desktop PCs is so good, many businesses forget the need for maintenance, upgrading or replacement.

“Servers are a good case in point,” says Steve Daly, Cam’s recently appointed commercial director. “Most hardware is supplied by Cam with a three-year on-site service support contract which provides full cover for the duration of the term. But the problem arises when the three years expires and the Server is effectively unprotected against failure or malfunction.”

According to Daly, the consequences of Server failure, though rare, can be catastrophic for a business. “The Server effectively controls the whole IT system so when it’s not working correctly everything else is affected; our customers are particularly sensitive to the threat that if a key piece of hardware does fail, then their customers are left waiting at point of sale bemused by the failure and the long delays it can cause.”

Few businesses are disciplined enough to monitor the date of installation and age of their hardware, compounding the situation to the extent that service contracts can expire almost un-noticed.

Cam Systems’ advice as far as Servers are concerned is that replacement is almost always a better option than extending a warranty or support contract.

“The hardware might be in good shape and potentially capable of years more service but there is no tradition of periodic servicing of IT hardware, like you would do with a car,” explains Steve Daly. “Consequently, the only time you really become aware of frailties is when there is a stoppage. That is a really bad time to realise your on-site warranty cover has expired.”
IT is constantly and rapidly evolving to the point where new hardware will offer businesses substantial improvements in processing speed and data handling, all of which contribute to business efficiency.

“In the current economic climate it might be tempting to take an ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ approach to IT, but in the longer term this will prove to be a flawed strategy. In tough times it is the businesses that maximise their operating efficiency that are likely to prosper at the expense of those that don’t,” said Steve Daly.

Businesses concerned that their hardware may be out of warranty, or interested in upgrading their IT, should contact Cam Systems.  One of our Business Development Managers can then offer any advice, including a system health check if necessary.
