£30,000 investment in MIDaS server technology

Written by: Richard Jay 07/11/2007

Cam SystemsThe MIDaS Hub which manages and processes hundreds of thousands of online tyre transactions each year has been upgraded to provide users with double the processing power and four times the speed of the existing Hub.

The dramatic improvements are the result of a £30,000 investment to install a 64 bit infrastructure, which gives the system and its user’s far greater capacity and flexibility.

The upgrading of the MIDaS hosting hardware to new servers with SQL mirroring technology is expected to meet the needs of the customers for at least the next 5 years. This anticipates growth in the current user base as well as the increasing use of the MIDaS database for other applications, such as DriveRight and VRM Lookup.

The original SQL database used by MIDaS will sit on a new primary server that mirrors across to a secondary 'back up' server. In the unlikely event of a primary server failure, the mirrored server would immediately take over, with no system downtime.  A third server - known as the 'Witness' server - acts as the monitor to recognise any failure and authorise a switch from one server to another.

The switch to the new system is currently in progress and with any potential interruption or downtime being carefully managed we forecast no knock on effect to our customers.

Managing Director Mike Allen explained "Should there be a requirement then MIDaS wholesalers will be contacted individually in advance to discuss the details of the changeover and how it will be managed to ensure minimal business interruption."

"The changeover of servers may be a cause of minor inconvenience for substantial long term gain.  Use of the system is growing so fast that we needed to make sure it has the capacity and capability to meet future customer demand and this investment has more than achieved that aim."
